"[...] The "journeys - navigations" in the space-time of the short or the long History of this sea, as a reference space and place/archive, have rendered their multiple poetic results, which are charged with memories of experiences, the imprint of education, have a socio-political or ceremonial purpose, produce ecological sensitivity, and certainly bear a strong echo of intertextuality. The works as a whole yield a mixed patchwork of artistic and cultural where worlds of traces of the real, imaginary captures, relics of the past, and the present are merged. of dreams, mounds of memory, references, quotations, and comments, sometimes subtle and subtly and at others sufficiently prominent. An enriched conceptualisation of the Mediterranean is present, as a network of associations of traditions, beliefs and social exchanges is formed, dynamics of peaceful coexistence, rewritings of the once, histories of the here and now, even future perspectives."
Text by Thalia Stephanidou, Historian/Art Critic and Curator
The work is a series of enlarged digital prints made from scanned silkscreen matrices made from liquid silicone. The matrix, or engraved surface, is a sculptural-relief object, which through the printing process defines this act as Engraving Art. The whole process moves between the three-dimensional and two-dimensional space and the idea straddles the line between printmaking and sculpture. This material, captures parts of beaches in Cyprus, thus recording the location of different natural elements, such as rocks, pebbles, shells, and seawood, elements that move and resemble different beaches around the Mediterranean.
The act of casting the liquid silicone causes the material to play with the plant structures and choreograph its own paths among the objects it encloses. The result is to create cavities that place the unknown between the realms of light and shadow. The solid can be inked and its negative and antipode printed, commenting on the relationship that modern human has with the natural environment.
The way of realizing this particular work, starting from the methodology of Printing and Engraving, raises questions about the process of the artistic process of creation itself, the fluidity in the art of life, the search for the meaning of life, the concept of identity and the otherness of each person.
